Using Your HSA/FSA for Holistic Services Reimbursement
Holistic healers are practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that falls outside of mainstream medicine, but increasing numbers of physicians have begun to embrace CAM treatments in tandem with traditional treatments in a practice called "integrative medicine." Holistic medicine encompasses a wide range of treatments and therapies, but its medical philosophy is rooted in the search for optimal health and wellness through the balance between the mind, body, spirit and emotions.
Reiki is considered an established alternative healing method by both HSA and FSA standards. However, coverage depends on your specific provider, employer plan, and/or account administrator’s guidelines. It is important to check with your HSA/FSA provider directly to verify eligibility before beginning treatment.
To qualify, Reiki sessions must support a diagnosed medical or mental health condition, not just general wellness or relaxation, and be recommended by a licensed medical or mental health professional.
Requirements for Reimbursement for Reiki
To comply with IRS and plan guidelines, Reiki must be considered medically necessary. That means you’ll need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) or Prescription from a doctor, chiropractor, therapist or other licensed healthcare provider.
An LMN should include:
• Diagnosis – The condition being treated (e.g., chronic pain, anxiety, fibromyalgia)
• Treatment Plan – How Reiki will address your condition, with recommended frequency
• Medical Purpose – Confirmation that Reiki is needed for treatment, not just general wellness or relaxation
*Save your LMN and receipts for your records.
With a valid LMN, the following conditions may be eligible for reimbursement:
